“The Function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-- that is the goal of true education.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK Jr. was born in Atlanta, January 15, 1929 to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. He married Coretta Scott on June 18, 1953 and they had four children. He was inspired by his Christian faith to achieve legal equality for African Americans in the United States. Instead of using violence he chose to use education, the power of words, and non-violent resistance such as protests, grassroots organizations and civil disobedience to reach his goals of equality.             Education can teach people to develop their own level of intelligence. Education should also help instruct people to use the learned intelligence wisely and for good and to help develop their own set of morals and values. In my opinion, this translates into those learned values people have achieved is also a part of education and is evident when a person utilizes their education properly for their own good.             Dr. King used his education, his moral standards and his desire for equal rights, to help achieve desegregation. In 1964 Congress passed the landmark Civil Rights Act, eliminating racial segregation in the United States. Thus making it illegal to discriminate against blacks and/or other minorities in hiring for jobs or in achieving an education and even in public accommodations. (thekingcenter.org)

In my observation of life, I would say that my education along with values and morals I have learned have helped my raise my two daughters. Being a mother I must not only be a role model of values and morals, but also take it upon myself to teach them the right and wrongs of life. Of course, they must also learn on their own and make their own judgement calls, but you as a parent also can influence how they decide. For instance if you lead a healthy life and do not drink or smoke, the role model for the child is to live the same way. One day let us say you find someone’s wallet, and you do the correct thing of finding the owner and returning everything as you found it, that is a good moral decision. Your child will learn the right thing from seeing you model that behavior. If you model the morally correct ways in your life, then hopefully they will see the positive outcome of it.
